As I was caring for a set of triplets one night, the name "Rest Assured" came to me. After the 12:00 a.m. feeding, the last baby was put with his siblings in their crib. They were all bundled up in their blankets and slept so soundly. (Trust me, a set of triplets sleeping at one time is sight to behold for any mom, dad or doula!) The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful and it occurred to me that this would be a good name for a doula service.
The word "doula" (δοῦλα) originates from the Greek language meaning female servant. A postpartum doula will give support to the needs of the new mother and baby by helping her in the areas of breastfeeding, newborn care and giving emotional support to the new family.
The duties of a postpartum doula include the following:
The doula will NOT demand a certain way for you raise your child. She won't "take over" with your baby. The doula is there to help foster the bonding process between the newborn and each member of his/her family. She is also there to help the mom during her recovery period. When time permits, the doula will help with light household tidying. At night, the doula's responsibilities focus more on the baby and the mother.
Allow me the opportunity to help you in this transitional time with you and your new baby.
